Individual Therapy

Individual therapy or psychotherapy involves sessions to resolve issues or problems.  Dr. Anderson works with adult clients to address therapeutic goals by supporting clients to build on their own strengths while introducing new skills.  These areas of strengths—combined with new skills—provide the foundation for challenging automatic negative thoughts and related  behaviors.  Changing old patterns and building on successfully managing adversity or conflict differently can allow individuals to create “stepping stones” to experiencing life and relationships as more balanced, empowered, and determined.

Depending on the concerns, clients may benefit from incorporating stress reducing techniques while practicing new skills between sessions—such as systematic relaxation or deep breathing—that can be incorporated into daily life.  Each case is individualized to meet the specific needs of the clients.

How do I start therapy?

Clients may pay for sessions by providing payment for services or by applying insurance benefits toward fees.  If you want to use insurance, you are encouraged to contact your insurance company to determine benefits.  Anderson Psychological Services, LLC may also check benefits, if preferred.

Therapy begins with a comprehensive clinical interview to review symptoms, concerns and relevant history.  With this information, a diagnosis is given, if appropriate.  Dr. Anderson works with clients to develop specific therapy goals that are realistic and attainable, and which act as a guide for future therapy sessions.

Is it possible to have a family member join a session?

Yes, a spouse or partner can join an individual session on occasion if the client consents to their participation.  However, since the signed therapy agreement is for individual therapy, family participation will be on a limited basis.  Unlike couples therapy in which the emphasis is on the couple and the shared goals of the couple, the purpose would be to support the client around the concerns that brought them into therapy.
